We know mishaps can happen relatively often on your carpet, including spilled wax from a candle. What do you do to solve the problem? First of all, do not panic. Here are easy to follow steps for removing wax from carpet.
Step 1: Collect your Materials
Ensure you have all the necessary materials to tackle the task of removing wax from the carpet. To do so, you will need:
- a bag of ice
- a towel
- a butter knife
- an iron
- a brown paper bag
- carpet cleaner
- a second towel
- a vacuum
With any accident on the carpet, it’s better to fix the situation sooner than later. This will significantly increase your chances of getting wax out entirely with no damage to your home’s carpet. If you don’t have any of these materials, we recommend adding them to your next shopping list. This will allow you always to be prepared for potential accidents on your carpet.
Step 2: Freeze the Wax
Wax is a lot easier to remove when it is in a solid form. Freezing the spilled wax will stop it from further melting into the carpet and will allow you to remove the wax from the carpet in larger portions at a time.
Take your bag of ice and place it entirely over the spilled wax. Wait for a few minutes until the wax is as cold as possible. To protect your carpet from getting wet, feel free to use a towel to cover the bag of ice.
Step 3: Scrape the Wax
Now that the wax is frozen solid, it is time to scrape off as much of the wax as possible. Use your butter knife to lift the wax, separating it from the carpet. Removing the majority of the wax now will decrease the chances of remaining wax later. Once you have removed as much of the wax as possible, it is time to move onto Step 4.
Step 4: Heat the Wax to Remove
Wait… Reheat the wax again? Yes, now that most of the wax is gone, we are ready to reheat the wax to remove the remnants. Turn your iron on to a low temperature. Be extremely careful that your iron is not too hot that it damages your carpet! For best results, avoid using a steam setting as well.
Instead of direct application to your carpet and the spilled wax, place the brown paper bag over the remaining wax and rub the iron over the brown paper bag. The wax will melt and stick to the brown paper bag, leaving tiny remnants on your carpet.
Step 5: Clean the Carpet
Amazingly, now the wax should be practically removed from your carpet! There is most likely still a small mess though, so it is best to bring out your carpet cleaning products and second towel. Blot the stain until it is removed from the carpet.
Step 6: Vacuum the Carpet
Once you’ve cleaned the carpet the best you can, wait for the area to dry and begin to vacuum any other remnants of wax.
Step 7: Seek Professional Assistance
